Many years ago, during a vacation in Europe, I indulged in the deliciousness of Nutella. Whether for breakfast or dessert, this chocolate hazelnut spread was a favorite treat. However, upon returning home and delving into the ingredients, I realized Nutella wasn’t as healthy as I had hoped. This realization led me on a quest to find a healthier, lower-sugar alternative to this beloved spread.

What is Nutella?

The history of Nutella dates back to the early 1800s during a time when chocolate was scarce due to import laws. Chocolatiers began blending hazelnuts with chocolate to create “gianduia,” a spreadable treat that grew in popularity. Fast forward to WWII, when chocolate was once again in short supply due to rationing. Italian chocolatier Pietro Ferrero revived the idea of blending hazelnuts with chocolate, giving birth to Nutella. Today, Nutella remains a popular spread in both Europe and the US.

Unfortunately, the American version of Nutella contains high levels of sugar and questionable ingredients. Despite its marketing as a healthy breakfast option, the reality is that Nutella falls into the category of sugary treats like donuts and pastries.

Is Nutella Healthy?

At first glance, the ingredients in Nutella may seem simple and harmless. However, a closer look reveals hidden issues with this spread:

Nutella Ingredients: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk powder, whey powder, soy lecithin, and vanillin

Despite the seemingly pronounceable ingredients, Nutella falls short of being a nutritious choice. With high added sugar content, artificial flavors, and lack of health benefits, Nutella doesn’t meet the criteria for a healthy food option. If you wouldn’t eat a candy bar for breakfast, it might be time to reconsider including Nutella in your diet.

Sugar

The primary ingredient in Nutella is refined sugar, and in significant quantities. Just two tablespoons of Nutella contain 21 grams of sugar, equivalent to five sugar cubes. What’s more, the sugar used in Nutella is often from beets, a highly refined and possibly GMO source containing pesticides. Opting for organic and non-GMO sugar is crucial for health-conscious choices.

Palm Oil

Palm oil, a common ingredient in Nutella, is a healthy fat that presents environmental concerns when not sourced sustainably. Nutella uses 100% certified sustainable palm oil, which is a step in the right direction but still raises ethical considerations.

Soy Lecithin

Soy lecithin, another ingredient in Nutella, poses potential health risks when not sourced organically. Often derived from GMO crops and processed with harsh chemicals, soy lecithin contains xenoestrogens that can disrupt hormone balance. Choosing healthier alternatives like sunflower seeds is recommended.

Commercial Dairy

Non-organic skim milk powder in Nutella comes from cows raised in poor conditions and fed GMO grains and antibiotics. The resulting dairy product is not ideal for consumption, especially when considering oxidized cholesterol levels created during processing.

Hazelnuts

While hazelnuts are a nutritious food, commercial hazelnuts are often sprayed with pesticides. Opting for organic hazelnuts eliminates the risk of pesticide contamination.

Cocoa Powder

Cocoa, a key ingredient in Nutella, faces ethical challenges in its production. Child slave labor is a prevalent issue in the cocoa industry, prompting concerns about supporting such practices. Choosing cocoa produced ethically without child labor is essential.

Vanillin

Vanillin, an artificial vanilla flavoring used in Nutella, lacks the nutritional benefits of real vanilla extract. Derived from sources like wood pulp and combined with sugar or corn syrup, vanillin does not offer the same quality as natural vanilla.

Nutella: Health Washing?

Despite its misleading marketing as a healthy product, Nutella faced a lawsuit in 2012 for deceptive health claims. The parent company, Ferrero USA, paid a settlement and was required to adjust its packaging and marketing to reflect the high sugar content accurately. This incident highlighted the need to scrutinize food labels and marketing claims.

Is There a Healthy Nutella?

While homemade Nutella recipes offer a healthier alternative, not everyone has the time to make it from scratch. Thankfully, there are now better store-bought options available that provide a healthier choice. Nutiva’s Organic Hazelnut Spread is one such option that offers a lower-sugar, ethically sourced, and nutritious alternative to traditional Nutella.

A Healthy Alternative to Nutella

Nutiva’s hazelnut spread stands out for being organic, non-GMO verified, dairy-free, and gluten-free. With significantly less sugar, ethically sourced ingredients, and added omega-3s, Nutiva’s spread provides a delicious and healthier option for Nutella fans.

Delicious Ways to Eat Hazelnut Spread

Whether you opt for homemade or store-bought hazelnut spread, there are endless ways to enjoy this delectable treat:

  • Dip for banana chips
  • In a smoothie
  • Topping for pancakes or waffles
  • Mocha coffee
  • Nut butter substitute
  • Hot chocolate
  • Drizzle over ice cream

Swapping Out Your Nutella

Transitioning to a healthier version of Nutella allows you to savor the taste without compromising on nutritional value or excessive sugar intake. Moderation is key, and with the availability of better alternatives, you can enjoy hazelnut spread guilt-free.

Consider options like Nutiva Chocolate Hazelnut Spread or other ethically sourced, sustainable brands that prioritize quality ingredients and nutrition. Making informed choices about the foods we consume contributes to a healthier lifestyle.

Are you ready to swap out your Nutella for a better alternative? Embracing healthier options can lead to improved well-being and a more conscious approach to food consumption.

Conclusion

Exploring the ingredients and history of Nutella sheds light on the importance of making informed choices about the foods we consume. While Nutella may be a beloved treat for many, understanding its ingredients and health implications is crucial for making healthier decisions. Opting for alternatives like Nutiva’s Organic Hazelnut Spread offers a more nutritious and ethically sourced option for hazelnut spread enthusiasts.
