While I was looking into the latest updates on brain-computer interfaces the other day, I found myself going down a completely different technological rabbit hole. Brain implants usually feel like they are pulled straight out of a sci-fi movie to most of us; on one hand, it is incredibly exciting, but on the other, the idea of having our skulls drilled (at least for now) is pretty terrifying. Right as I was deepening my research, I stumbled upon a piece of technology that builds a bridge between our brains and our devices without any surgical intervention—and it does this using our tongue.

MouthPad, developed by a company called Augmental, has finally hit the market. When I saw the prototype two years ago, I honestly asked myself, “Will this ever become a reality?” Today, it has evolved into a commercial product with a waiting list of over 6,300 people. Frankly, seeing where accessibility technology has arrived both surprised me and gave me an incredible amount of hope. Let’s take a closer look at this magical device that allows us to control our computers and phones from inside our mouths.

First Look: The Hidden Control Center in Your Mouth

When you first see the MouthPad, it is completely normal to mistake it for a clear orthodontic aligner or an Invisalign retainer. The sheer genius of this device lies exactly in its invisibility. Resting against the roof of your mouth and upper teeth, this apparatus weighs a mere 10 grams. Looking from the outside, nobody even realizes you are carrying cutting-edge hardware inside your mouth.

So, what exactly is packed inside this thin resin?

Pressure-Sensitive Trackpad: There is a custom trackpad located right where it touches the roof of your mouth, designed to detect the subtle movements of your tongue.Motion Sensors: Built-in gyroscopes and accelerometers track the movements of your head to navigate the cursor on the screen.Bluetooth Module: It connects the device wirelessly to any platform, whether it is Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android.Custom Battery: A safe power source designed to withstand the wet, highly active environment of the human mouth while offering long usage times.

I have to admit, if it were me, I would initially be a bit hesitant about placing an electronic device inside my mouth. However, the Augmental team solved this potential issue by making the device custom-fit for every single user. Just like visiting a dentist, they take a 3D intraoral scan of your teeth, and the device is 3D-printed entirely according to your unique mouth structure. This ensures a flawless, ergonomic fit that won’t disrupt your speech.

Why Specifically the “Tongue”? (Our Biological Advantage)

While researching this, one of the details that impressed me the most was why the engineers specifically chose the tongue. If we look at the human brain’s motor cortex map (the homunculus), we see that the area dedicated to the tongue and mouth is significantly larger and more complex than the areas dedicated to our arms or legs.

Our tongue is:

An incredibly sensitive organ capable of detecting microscopic textures.Highly resistant to fatigue (we can talk or chew all day, and our tongue rarely gets “tired”).Equipped with fine motor skills that can easily rival our fingertips.

MouthPad basically takes this massive biological advantage and turns it into a computer interface. You can move your mouse simply by sliding your tongue across the pad, and perform a “left-click” by lightly pressing your tongue against your palate.

How Does It Work? More Than Just a “Click”

The second-generation MouthPad promises much more than just moving a mouse pointer. When I looked at the hands-on reviews and the company’s demonstration videos, I realized just how capable this piece of hardware really is:

Head Tracking Navigation: By tilting or turning your neck slightly, you can glide the mouse across the screen smoothly.Tongue Scrolling: To scroll down social media feeds or long articles, you just slide your tongue up or down on the trackpad.Shortcut Assignments: This is the absolute killer feature. You can assign specific keyboard shortcuts to distinct tongue movements.Sip and Puff Support: This traditional input method, which has been used for years by patients with paralysis, is integrated into the MouthPad as an additional command option.

Seeing users not only browse the web but also play chess, perform 3D modeling, and even compete in video games using these features absolutely fascinated me.

Neuralink vs. MouthPad: Which Makes More Sense?

Let’s address the elephant in the room. When Elon Musk’s Neuralink exists, why should we wear a plastic retainer in our mouths?

The answer is actually quite simple: Risk and Accessibility.

Neuralink offers a much deeper integration by reading brain signals directly. But getting there means undergoing serious surgery to open your skull and implant electrodes into your brain tissue. The long-term effects, infection risks, and what happens in the event of hardware failure are still massive question marks.

On the other hand, MouthPad is a non-invasive solution. It is risk-free, available to use today, and if you don’t like it, you can just take it out of your mouth and toss it in a drawer. According to Augmental, the speed and accuracy of the MouthPad are at similar levels to brain-computer interfaces like Neuralink. Even though it isn’t reading our brains directly, it uses our tongue—which our brain controls flawlessly—as a proxy, meaning latency is practically non-existent.

If you ask me, for the next decade, the most practical and safe solution for the masses won’t be surgical implants, but wearable and highly integrated assistants like the MouthPad.

Pricing and The Target Audience

Let’s talk about the financial side of things. MouthPad currently comes with a $1,400 price tag. When you compare it to a standard gaming mouse or keyboard, this number might seem steep. However, we really shouldn’t evaluate this device as a standard consumer accessory.

For individuals who have suffered spinal cord injuries, those living with ALS, or people who cannot use their hands due to a stroke, this device is an invaluable ticket to freedom. The fact that it is custom-made, houses highly advanced sensor technology, and is manufactured from medical-grade materials completely justifies this price. As the technology becomes cheaper and the production scale grows, this number will undoubtedly come down.

The fact that 6,300 people are currently waiting in line proves just how immense the hunger is for practical, surgery-free solutions in the market.

My Final Thoughts: Is the Future on the Tip of Our Tongues?

For years, we have witnessed hardware shrinking and screens getting closer to our faces (like AR/VR headsets). Yet, when it comes to human-computer interaction (HCI), we were still stuck in the 40-year-old logic of keyboards and mice. MouthPad breaking this taboo opens the doors to an entirely new interface, not just for individuals with disabilities, but for all of us in the future.

Just imagine: you are walking down the street, and to reply to a message popping up on your augmented reality (AR) glasses, you no longer need to pull out your phone or make weird hand gestures in the air. With just a tiny movement of your tongue, you approve or reject the message. It is a seamless, invisible, and highly personal control mechanism.

I see the MouthPad as a giant leap forward in the hardware world. They have built a perfect bridge between the intimidating nature of a surgical implant and the clunkiness of traditional hardware.

Now, I want to hear your thoughts. Would you be open to placing a smart device like this inside your mouth for a completely hands-free experience, or are you one of those people who says, “I’ll never give up my trusty old mouse”? Let’s discuss it in the comments!
