WASHINGTON —

Donald Trump has been on the attack against Kamala Harris, accusing her of being a radical with views that are out of touch with the American people ever since she became the Democratic presidential nominee after Joe Biden. But despite Trump’s relentless claims that Harris is a Marxist or a fascist, his wild accusations seem to be falling flat.

Recent polls show that Harris has been gaining popularity among voters, with a narrow lead in the national popular vote. A Wall Street Journal poll revealed that 49% of voters view Harris positively, a significant increase from July. On the other hand, 59% of voters believe Trump is “too extreme” to be president, while only 46% think the same of Harris.

So why are Trump’s attacks failing to stick? For starters, Harris is not a Marxist as Trump claims. Historian Paul Buhle has found no evidence to support these accusations. Harris has positioned herself as a progressive, but well within the mainstream of current Democratic ideology, distancing herself from any radical views.

Her policy stances have also resonated with a broad audience. While some of her proposals may be considered progressive, like a federal ban on price-gouging, they have found favor with a majority of voters. On the contrary, Trump’s attacks on Harris have been inconsistent and unfocused, failing to resonate with undecided voters.

Campaign strategists believe that Trump’s lack of a coherent message against Harris is hurting his chances of winning over voters. Instead of focusing on the economy or demonstrating how he would do a better job than Harris, Trump’s campaign has been muddled with name-calling and inconsistent arguments.

While Harris has been able to present herself as a change agent, Trump’s campaign has struggled to outline a clear vision for the future. The strategists suggest that Trump should tie Harris more closely to Biden’s economic record and emphasize her weaknesses, such as doubts about her ability to lead in a crisis.

While Trump’s television commercials have been more targeted in their messaging, his public appearances often deviate from the script, leading to a lack of consistency in his attacks on Harris. As Harris continues to improve her image among undecided voters, Trump’s erratic behavior may be costing him support.

As the election draws closer, Trump’s refusal to adhere to a disciplined campaign strategy could be his downfall. While Harris gains ground with voters, Trump’s self-indulgent behavior may ultimately prevent him from winning over key demographics. Only time will tell if Trump can pivot his campaign in a more effective direction.
