With longtime Hitman developer IO Interactive set to release its first foray into the world of James Bond later this week with the highly anticipated 007 First Light, it’s the perfect time to look back at the franchise’s history and select the top seven games to star Britain’s most famous secret agent, Bond…James Bond.

7) GoldenEye 007: Reloaded

A reimagining of the beloved Nintendo 64 classic was made for the Wii in 2010 and then ported and upgraded for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 the following year. It’s a solid game, swapping out Pierce Brosnan for Daniel Craig, but it never reached the heights of the original.

From Russia With Love (Electronic Arts) on IMDB

6) From Russia with Love

A good bit of nostalgia for anyone who views Sean Connery as the definitive Bond, From Russia with Love was a third-person shooter that featured the actor’s likeness and had new voice work from Connery. It was both his first time doing anything associated with the role in over 20 years and his final performance as 007.

5) 007: Quantum of Solace

Don’t be misled by the title as the game is more influenced by Casino Royale than its sequel. It was the first Bond game under the Activision banner, and though it had a short runtime it managed to deliver solid first-person shooter action. A fun bit of trivia: motion capture for Bond was done by Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

James Bond 007: Blood Stone (Activision) on IMDB

4) James Bond 007: Blood Stone

Written by Bruce Feirstein, who worked on the Brosnan films, Blood Stone has, arguably, done the best job to date of feeling like a true extension of the Bond universe with snappy dialogue, exotic locales, and double crosses. Plus, it had excellent music and solid voice work from Craig and Judi Dench. The gameplay, however, topped out at middling.

3) James Bond 007: Nightfire

Electronic Arts tried to recapture the GoldenEye magic here, and it did a decent enough job, offering up various in-game activities that more closely simulated what life as Bond might entail rather than purely making it a shooter. While Brosnan’s likeness was used, he didn’t voice lines for the character.

2) James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing

In terms of production values, Everything or Nothing stepped things up, not only getting Brosnan and Dench but also John Cleese, Heidi Klum, and Willem Dafoe. The move to third-person breathed life into a franchise that had been chasing GoldenEye’s success for years, and it added melee combat to shooting and stealth.

1) GoldenEye 007

You knew this was coming. While the genre has advanced by leaps and bounds since Rare’s 1997 masterpiece, GoldenEye 007 was hugely important to the rise in popularity of first-person shooters on consoles. It offered different ways to achieve its objectives, weapons and gadgets, and, of course, split-screen multiplayer deathmatch.
