From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Veteran coach Dick Advocaat is set to make history at 78, as he is returning to lead Curacao at next month’s World Cup where he will become the tournament’s oldest coach ever.
His appointment was confirmed by the Caribbean island’s football association at a press conference on Tuesday, following the resignation of Fred Rutten.
Advocaat steps back into the role he vacated in February because of the illness of his daughter.
Rutten, 63, had been his designated successor, but his brief tenure saw two defeats in March – 2-0 against China and 5-1 to Australia.
This quickly led to calls for Advocaat’s return last week, fuelled by alleged player discontent and a public statement from the federation’s leading sponsor, a tourism company, advocating for the veteran coach.
Initially, Curacao federation president Gilbert Martina had issued a strong statement supporting Rutten, refusing to consider a change. However, the Dutch-born coach ultimately “saw the writing on the wall” and resigned on Monday.
Martina, on Tuesday, denied claims of a “player putsch”, stating: “After it became known that Advocaat’s daughter was better, a very negative campaign was launched in the press in which Rutten was cast in a bad light. But the players have denied those negative statements.”
Rutten himself explained his decision, saying: “A climate must not arise that undermines healthy professional relations, within both the squad and the staff. That is why it is wise to step down.”
Martina subsequently contacted Advocaat on Monday, finalising his return the following day.
Under Advocaat’s previous guidance, Curacao achieved a historic first World Cup qualification, though he missed the decisive match against Jamaica last November due to his daughter’s health.
With a population of just over 150,000 and a land area of 171 square miles, Curacao will be the smallest nation ever to compete at the World Cup.
They have been drawn into Group E, where they will face Ecuador, Germany, and the Ivory Coast in the tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
This will mark Advocaat’s third appearance at the World Cup finals.
He previously managed the Netherlands at the 1994 tournament, also held in the U.S., and South Korea in 2006 in Germany.
At 78, he comfortably surpasses the record held by German Otto Rehhagel, who was 71 years and 317 days old when he led Greece against Argentina in their final group game at the 2010 finals in South Africa.
