Luka Doncic has yet to feature for the Lakers in the playoffs after suffering a hamstring injury against the Thunder in early April. While reports claimed he traveled to Spain for treatment following the injury, Brian Windhorst offered a different theory on Tuesday, drawing backlash from Lakers fans.

The ESPN insider made his bold speculation regarding Doncic’s visit to Spain during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, suggesting it had little to do with his hamstring injury.

“I am a big actions over words guy, when Luka got hurt, they said Luka went to Spain for ‘treatment,'” Windhorst explained. “I’ve heard of going to Germany (for treatment), but I’ve never heard of going to Spain.”

Windhorst continued to back up his speculation with further assumptions, claiming Doncic could have gone to Madrid to visit his newborn, while adding that the Lakers knew his injury was serious from the start.

“He lives in Madrid during the offseason,” Windhorst continued. “When they sent him overseas, that was like you’re not going to be doing anything for a few weeks anyway, go ahead to Europe because you came back 48 hours after your child was born.”

Lakers fans, however, were not pleased with Windhorst making assumptions and quickly called him out online for allegedly spreading misinformation.

Fans continued to criticize Windhorst, with one user in particular pointing out that Spain is considered one of the top countries for stem cell treatment.

While there may have been some truth to Windhorst’s comments, reports suggested Doncic traveled to Slovenia to visit his daughters in between treatment sessions.

However, there is little doubt that his trip to Spain was also focused on speeding up his recovery in hopes of returning to help the Lakers during the playoffs.

Luka Doncic has remained sidelined with a Grade 2 hamstring strain since the start of April and looks likely to miss most of the Lakers’ series against the OKC Thunder.

On Monday, NBA insider Shams Charania provided an update on the guard’s injury, claiming he is still not up to speed for Game 1.

“I’m told Luka will be out to start the series,” Shams said. “One source told me it’s still a slow path on Doncic’s recovery. He’s doing more on the court but still not doing full-contact workouts.”

The Lakers have struggled offensively in Doncic’s absence and were blown out by the Thunder in Game 1. Los Angeles will be hoping to have its star guard available later in the series as it looks to bounce back in Game 2.
