The new Michael movie is a hagiographic depiction of the singer’s early years, through his creation of the iconic Thriller album.
Although the movie shows Michael visiting children in the hospital, there is one angle that it controversially and conspicuously avoids: the child abuse accusations that Jackson faced before his untimely death at age 50.
Why did the movie leave out the child abuse allegations against Michael Jackson? And what were they? There was a reason for it, as it turns out.
The Original Michael Movie Cut Did Get Into the Abuse Accusations
According to Variety, the movie initially contained a scene showing police cars arriving to search Neverland Ranch after Michael was accused of child sex abuse. However, that scene was cut.
The movie “was supposed to explore the impact of the allegations on Jackson’s life, with much of its third act devoted to the scandal. But that finale was scrapped, along with any mention of the child molestation accusations,” Variety reported. Instead the film, which stars Michael’s nephew Jafaar Jackson, focused on Jackson’s childhood, his relationship with his father, and his embarking on a solo career, which led to the making of Thriller.
There was a legal reason for the change. The filmmakers “realized there was a clause in a settlement with one of the singer’s accusers, Jordan Chandler, that barred the depiction or mention of him in any movie,” added Variety.
The director made it clear that he wanted to deal with the accusations surrounding Michael in an unflinching way.
“I shot (Michael) being stripped naked, treated like an animal, a monster,” director Antoine Fuqua told The New Yorker.
The other issue is that the filmmakers needed approval from Michael Jackson’s estate to use his music in the film, which wouldn’t be the same without it.
What Were the Child Sex Abuse Allegations Against Michael Jackson?

In 1993, Michael Jackson was accused of “sexually molesting a 13-year-old boy he had befriended; a civil suit was settled out of court,” Britannica wrote in a summary of the allegations.
Jackson “settled for about twenty-three million dollars; afterward, (Jordan) Chandler stopped cooperating with prosecutors, and the investigation was closed,” The New Yorker reported.
“Ten years later, however, the singer was arrested and charged (in November 2003) with child molestation involving a different boy than the 1993 case,” Britannica reported. However, Jackson was acquitted in 2005. He died four years later.
However, after his death, other accusations emerged. In 2019, the HBOdocumentaryLeaving Neverland “highlighted the claims of two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who said that Jackson sexually abused them when they were children,” added Britannica.
However, Jackson’s estate sued, denying the accusations, and the show was removed, the site added. More accusations arose in 2026 from a “family that included five children who had befriended Jackson in the 1990s. Although the family had publicly defended the singer on many occasions, including after his death, in 2026 they sued his estate,” Britannica noted, adding that the estate against denied the allegations.
