Before Michael Patrick’s death, he was given a heartbreaking prognosis — which he revealed in his final Instagram post.
Two months before his death, the Game of Thrones actor took to the photo sharing app to offer followers an update on his battle with Motor Neurone Disease, better known as ALS. In early February, Patrick started his message by recognizing that he had officially been living with the nervous system disease for three years. He went on to share that he had decided against undergoing a tracheostomy, a neck procedure designed to secure an airway, because of the lengthy recovery time:
“I had confirmation from it would be around 6-12 months before I could get home due to lack of staffing resources. Thanks so much to everyone who helped push this – from senior social workers, to politicians, to the chief executive of the hospital. Everyone has tried so hard, but there just isn’t the staff.”

He then went on to reveal a heartbreaking reality:
“Also, my neurologist gave us the news that I likely have about 1 year left (obviously he can’t say for definite and we still have hope for the drug trial to buy some more time too). So I don’t want to risk a significant amount of that time being in a hospital bed.”
What a devastating reality it must have been to hear those words. Michael went on:
“Thanks so much for all the donations to the GoFundMe, even though I didn’t go ahead with the tracheostomy – it will still go towards providing me with specialist care as I enter the final stages of life. I’m still overwhelmed by all your generosity.”

On Wednesday, Michael’s wife Naomi Sheehan announced he died in hospice at just 35 years old.
Our hearts are with his loved ones during this unimaginable time. Rest in peace.
