Manchester United return to action on Saturday when Brentford, who have made a habit of scoring early goals this season, visit Old Trafford.
Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are nearing availability, but this weekend is still too soon for them. The left-back position remains a concern for Erik ten Hag, especially since Noussair Mazraoui recently underwent a minor heart procedure and has only just resumed training.
Mazraoui, who usually played at right-back, allowed Diogo Dalot to fill in on the left. With Mazraoui’s status uncertain and Dalot the only fully fit senior full-back, Ten Hag faces a dilemma in deciding the defensive lineup.
One solution could be to keep Dalot on the left and find a temporary fix on the right side instead.
Although not his preferred position, Dalot’s experience as a specialist full-back may make him best suited to handle Brentford’s main threat from Bryan Mbeumo on the right flank.
Dalot stayed on the left in a recent match and made a crucial block, indicating Ten Hag’s possible intentions.
On the other hand, having two players out of position could be a concern. Moving Dalot back to the right would address this, leaving one player out of position, and prompt a decision on the left-back role.
Lindelof, who featured at right-back in the last game, could continue in that role against Brentford. He has also played at left-back when needed, including against Brentford last season.
Martinez, who struggled in a recent game, may not start against Brentford. His absence could lead to a defensive reshuffle, especially with Harry Maguire out injured.
Martinez has played at left-back before and could be an option for Ten Hag if needed.
Harry Amass, a talented youngster, could be a surprise inclusion in the lineup. He has the potential but lacks experience at the senior level.
Although highly regarded by Luke Shaw, relying on Amass would be a bold move for Ten Hag.
Toby Collyer, primarily a midfielder, has played at left-back in previous matches. He is a trusted player for Ten Hag and could be a viable alternative.
Collyer demonstrated his versatility in a recent game and is someone Ten Hag could turn to for added defensive stability.
