Alexander Isak’s sole aim at Liverpool is to make history, having joined the Premier League champions in a British-record £125m move from Newcastle United.

Isak’s standoff with Newcastle was the biggest story of the transfer window, with the Sweden international exiled from their squad as he pushed for a move to Anfield.

That deal finally materialised on deadline day, as Newcastle sold Isak for a Premier League record fee, with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa being brought in as replacements.

Isak scored 54 Premier League goals for Newcastle, second only to Alan Shearer (148), with 23 of those coming in his final campaign for the club.

In March, Isak netted what proved to be the winner as Newcastle beat Liverpool in the EFL Cup final, becoming the first Magpies player to net the winning goal in a major domestic final since George Robledo in 1952 (versus Arsenal in the FA Cup).

Isak, who also won the Copa del Rey with Real Sociedad in 2021 and the DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund in 2017, now has his eyes on more silverware.

“I think it’s a mixture of what the club is building, on top of what the club already is and the history of the club,” Isak told Liverpool’s website when asked why he wanted the move.

“Me getting the chance to be a part of this… I want to create history. I want to win trophies.

“That’s ultimately the biggest motivation for me and I feel like this is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level and help the team as well.

“I feel like this is the next step for me in my career. I’m super-happy that I’ve been given this chance, and I’m very motivated to do something good with it.”

Isak will form part of a star-studded Liverpool frontline, with fellow new signings Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike having bedded in alongside Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo.

“I’m looking forward to that. You’re mentioning some world-class players there,” Isak said.

“They’ve done well when I’ve played on the other side, and it’s going to be nice to be on the same team. I just hope I can bring my qualities and add to the team, and I want to have a great season.”

Isak did not feature in any of Newcastle’s pre-season friendlies or in their opening three games of the Premier League campaign, leaving him short of match fitness.

But he hopes to be able to participate when Liverpool host Burnley on September 14, saying: “I think that’s the ambition.

“However, I’ve had a tricky summer where I haven’t played any games, and I’ve had restricted training, so I think that’s one to judge and to analyse where I am at and how much I am ready to give. I certainly want to play as soon as possible.”
