Ange Postecoglou rued a familiar failure after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against Fulham as Tottenham let another opportunity go amiss.

Spurs dominated large periods of the second half at Craven Cottage but were punished for not capitalising on their ascendancy, with late goals from Rodrigo Muniz and Ryan Sessegnon sealing victory for the hosts.

Tottenham’s 15th Premier League defeat of the season, their joint-most at this stage of a campaign (also 15 after 29 matches in 1997-98), leaves them 13th in the Premier League table.

They could drop further down when Manchester United visit Leicester City on Sunday, and Postecoglou is eager to address their issues after Spurs’ sixth successive loss in a match prior to an international break.

“It was a tight game, it always is when you play here,” he told BBC Match of the Day. “I thought for the most part, we were pretty comfortable. We had a big chance to go ahead, and then we conceded a really soft goal and the game got away from us.

“Both goals were pretty soft. At the very least, you want to stay in the game. I thought in the second half, we were the better team and had the best chances up to that point. So, to concede is very disappointing.

“It’s been a difficult campaign, for sure. But I feel we’ve lost too many games that we should have got stuff out of, and this was one of those games.

“It’s another international break we go into off a loss, and you feel that. We just need to make sure we’re ready for when we come back.”

Meanwhile, Marco Silva celebrated his 200th Premier League match with a victory to keep Fulham well in the hunt for European places, with the Cottagers just four points adrift of fourth-place Chelsea.

After Muniz and Sessegnon climbed off the bench to find the net, Fulham have now scored 13 goals via substitutes in the Premier League this season, more than any other side.

“All of the first half was in our offensive half,” Silva said. “We had some good moments but, of course, the last pass, the last cross wasn’t the best. At half-time, the conversation was to be more patient.

“We wanted to finish in the top half of the table at the start of the season. Of course, if you are there, you can go up. We’re not going to try to compromise for anyone.

“I don’t like ifs in football. I like to look to the present and the future. For us, it’s game by game, not the end of the season.”

“It puts us right up there for the European spots, and it’s nice to get a goal as well,” added Sessegnon, who made just 57 appearances during an injury-hit five-year spell with Spurs.

“As a team, we have one eye [on the European places] and we’re taking it game by game. We just need to keep going.”
